BACCHANAL
BACCHANAL is an hour-long family drama about a teenage volleyball star who struggles to find love, escape her unpredictable home life in New York, and the limitations placed on her, as she battles her complicated relationship with her loving but alcoholic and abusive West Indian father. “Bacchanal” illustrates both sides of CALLIOPE, the passive child too timid and unsure of how to diffuse tension with her father, CONNOR, and the bold outspoken athlete who is confident enough in her abilities to know exactly what she wants from the world after graduation. Existing within two planes is a challenge, especially when Calliope’s volleyball talents are diminished by her lackluster grades, which results in interest from only local colleges mere minutes away from home, where she can no longer flourish because she and her family live in constant fear. “Bacchanal” is loosely based on my childhood. My childhood was filled with love, laughter, and trauma which has fueled a lot of my work. As a first generation American, I want to highlight the struggles my immigrant parents faced trying to raise their American children in a world that is drastically different from how they were raised.
